Wainwright Society Photographic Competition 2016
18/02/17

I was delighted that 'First Snow' was commended by Derry Brabbs who once again judged the Wainwright Society Photographic Competition. I have long admired Derry's work and so his generous comments (below) are all the more pleasing.

This is what Derry said about my image:

"I chose this image as being worthy of a 'mention in dispatches' because it is a great example of the benefits of using a vertical format for landscape to create added depth to a photograph. I love the way that Derwentwater snakes around the promontory of land and although the bottom right foreground is a bit dark, there is still enough detail there to make it work. The colour, framing and atmosphere are excellent."

I'm delighted to say that this photograph was shortlisted for the Architecture category of Professional Photograper Magazine's 2010 Photographer of the Year competition. The competition invites entries worldwide so, despite not winning, it is still very pleasing to have my image commended. It is featured, along with all the other winning and commended images, in the January issue of Professional Photographer magazine.

Outdoor Photography Magazine
23/12/10
My photograph from Bryn Alyn (below) features in the Viewpoints section of January's Outdoor Photography magazine. The picture was made in January this year following a unusually (for that part of the country) heavy fall of snow. I had the hill to myself that morning; in fact, I saw barely a soul all day until I encountered a field full of people sledging late on.

International Garden Photographer of the Year
12/11/08
The organisers of the competition have just announced that the exhibition of finalists for 2008 is to be displayed at Wakehurst Place in West Sussex from November 15th and, early in the new year, it will travel to Lacock Abbey (Wiltshire). The exhibition will open at Lacock on February 28th and close at the end of April.

As Lacock is the former home of William Henry Fox Talbot (recognised by many as the 'Father of Modern Photography'), it is exciting to know one of my images will be on display there.

'Standing Proud' was selected as one of 16 finalists in the 'Plant Portraits' category of this competition. Although I didn't win a prize with this picture it is still very pleasing that it was shortlisted in what is a truely international competition. All of the selected images are to be displayed in a purpose built outdoor exhibition at Kew Gardens between May and September and can be found in the AA book published to accompany the competition.

Photographic Commission for the Duchess of Westminster
12/07/07
From September 2007 to September 2008 I will be engaged on a commission for the Duchess of Westminster. My task is to produce a series of images capturing the architecture and landscapes of four rural estates - Eaton, Abbeystead, Reay Forest and La Garganta, throughout the four seasons. The estates are all very different; from the rolling countryside of Cheshire, the unspoiled moorland of Lancashire, the lonely expanses of the Scottish Highlands and the arid hills of Castilla La Mancha, I am sure each will provide its own unique challenges and rewards.

One of my images has been selected as the winner of the Wainwright Society Photographic Competition for 2006. The judge was the well known landscape photographer, Derry Brabbs who had a long association with Wainwright.

I was presented with my prize by Eric Robson earlier today in Blackburn Cathedral where the Society had gathered to celebrate the centenary of Wainwright's birth.
